Steps to port your number to another network In South Africa 2023
Transferring an existing mobile number from one network to another need not be a hassle from an administrative standpoint.
You may wish to switch service providers for a variety of reasons, such as to take advantage of eSIM features offered by a different network or for a cheaper price. When porting your number to a new network, you should not be required to alter your phone number or notify anyone.
Here are the steps you must take.
According to the Digital 2021: South Africa report published earlier this year by We Are Social and Hootsuite, South Africa’s population in January 2021 was 59.67 million, while the number of mobile connections was 100,6 million.
This equates to 168.5% of the population having a mobile connection, indicating that the vast majority has multiple mobile connections.
You may not have previously considered moving your number, but now that Telkom offers eSIM* functionality for prepaid clients, it is an intriguing alternative for those already on a prepaid line who wish to free up their physical SIM card slot for a data network provider like as rain.
This allows you to maintain a primary number for voice calls while using a less expensive network for data. If your phone supports an eSIM, you are strongly encouraged to use one. Black Friday may also be an excellent time to keep an eye out for data offers.
Here is how prepaid users can initiate the porting process to any network. If you have a 24-month contract, you must wait until the end of the term to cancel or you will be subject to penalties. The process often takes one to two days, and 12 hours if you’re lucky.
Steps to port your number to Telkom
Simply complete the RICA process at any Telkom location to receive a free Telkom prepaid SIM card or eSIM card. Send the text message “PORTME# ID Number# ICCID#” to 081 160 7678 from your existing SIM. The ICCID is a 20-digit number located on the SIM or eSIM starter kit.
If you’re using a physical SIM card, wait for it to go offline from your previous provider, which should take 1-2 days, and then place your new Telkom SIM card into your phone to connect.
You must scan a QR code and wait for connectivity to display on your phone when switching to an eSIM. In this case, your physical SIM slot will be available to accommodate any other (data) SIM card.
Steps to port your number to Vodacom
Purchase a new Vodacom prepaid SIM card and complete the RICA procedure. Send the message “portme” followed by your newly acquired SIM number to 082 767 8287 from your existing phone number.
You will receive two SMS messages: a confirmation and a date of porting. After your port date, call 136 to activate your new SIM card.
Steps to port your number to MTN
Acquire a new MTN prepaid SIM card without opening the beginning pack and without completing the RICA process. Send the text message “PortMe#” followed by your new MTN number to 083 767 8287 from your current number. You will receive an SMS confirming whether or not the request was approved.
The following day, plug your new MTN SIM card into your mobile phone and dial 136 to activate it.
Steps to port your number to Cell C
Purchase a Cell C starter kit from a retailer and complete the RICA process. Send an SMS with your new SIM serial number to 084 767 8287 from your existing number. There will be two SMS confirmations sent to you.
Wait until the old SIM loses network connectivity before inserting the new SIM.
*eSIM is a virtual embedded SIM that functions identically to a physical SIM card. It is exclusive to particular devices.
