Simba Sports Club plays its home games at Kariakoo Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

In 1936, after a split with another Tanzania team called the Tanzania Giants, the Dar Young Africans formed a new club and promptly changed its name to Queens to commemorate the monarch of England. From “Queens” to “Eagles” to “Sunderland,” the club has gone through a number of monikers. A name change to Simba occurred in 1971. (Swahili for “Lion”).

The “National League” was established in 1965. It was originally known as the First Division Soccer League, but in 1997 it was rebranded as the Premier League.

Competition

Each team in the Tanzanian Premier League (TPL) plays each other team twice (once at home and once on the road), per the standard double round robin format. There are three points up for grabs for the victor of each match, one point for a tie, and nothing for the losers.

 

Rankings and Promotions

In this league, the two worst-performing teams automatically drop down to the Championship, where they are replaced by the champion and runner-up from that division. The bottom two clubs in the Second Division will play the bottom two teams in the First Division in a play-in game to determine who will advance to the playoffs.
