Young Africans Sports Club, commonly referred as YANGA is a Tanzanian biggest football club based in Jangwani, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Founded in 1935, the club play their home games at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Nicknamed “Wananchi” (Citizens) and “Yanga” (Young Boys), the club has won 28 league titles and number of domestic cups, and have participated in multiple CAF Champions League editions. They have won the CECAFA Club Championship five times.

The club became a symbol of the anti-colonial movement. Young Africans became associated with nationalists and freedom fighters, and inspired the political party TANU to adopt yellow and green as their primary colours. The club is currently in a process that will keep the club ownership 49% for investors and the rest 51% to the club members.

The club’s origins may be traced back to the 1910s, but the club’s formal history began in 1935, when Dar es Salaam inhabitants, who were classified as Africans by the colonial authorities in Tanganyika, decided to organize a football club to participate in a league consisting of “non-African” football teams. According to reports, the club’s initial name is New Young. Later, the name was changed to Young Africans Sports Club.

After the organization’s formation in 1935, its members argued about the team’s poor performance and outcomes. In 1936, the club’s performance was much worse than in the previous year, prompting some of its members to join a new team. Arabs who saw fit to sow discord among club members and precipitate a split were the proponents of secession. They were successful and, along with dissidents, formed the Queens F.C. (currently Simba). Since that time, Young Africans and Simba have been rivals. The teams constitute the most exciting derby in Sub-Saharan Africa, one of the top five most discussed derbies in all of African football.
