Becoming a police officer is a challenging job that requires candidates to have peak physical and mental fitness, as well as strength of character. It’s also one of the most rewarding careers available. Whether you want to see the world, help people or just get paid for driving fast and shooting guns, being a police officer will provide you with an opportunity to do all those things and more. If you’re interested in becoming a police officer, you should know that there are many career paths within law enforcement. These roles range from local sheriff’s deputy to federal special agent. Each type of officer has their own responsibilities, training requirements and pay scale; however, there are some universal truths that apply to any applicant.

The day-to-day life of a police officer

All police officers have a day-to-day life that’s significantly different from one another. The types of crimes that occur in a given area will determine the kinds of investigations and work a particular officer is involved in. Officers who work in a patrol car, for example, will respond to calls for service as they come in. They may get dispatched to a car accident, domestic violence call, breaking and entering in progress, or assist a person who has been injured or become sick and needs medical attention. Investigators, on the other hand, will be assigned to specific cases and will follow them through to the end. For example, if a person committed a bank robbery and got away, investigators will be responsible for tracking down this person and bringing them to justice.

Training to be a police officer

The majority of police departments require applicants to be at least 21 years old. Candidates must also have a high school diploma or GED, as well as a clean criminal record. Most departments also require that candidates have a valid driver’s license and at least two years of driving experience. Most candidates will be required to pass a physical fitness test as well as a written test that gauges their knowledge of laws and criminal justice. Candidates may also be required to complete a polygraph test, a psychological evaluation and a thorough background investigation. Police departments across the country have different requirements for their training programs. Some start new recruits off with entry-level training, while others prefer candidates who have previous experience in law enforcement. The amount of time that one spends training to become a police officer varies from department to department, but on average, it takes between six and 12 months to become a full-time police officer.

Certification Requirements

Some police departments require their officers to earn a certain certification, while others don’t. For example, the federal government requires all Border Patrol agents and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agents to possess a bachelor’s degree. Candidates who want to become a federal agent must also pass a rigorous exam that tests their knowledge of the country’s criminal laws. Local law enforcement agencies also have certification requirements for their officers. For example, some departments require their police officers to have EMT certification or a First Responder certification. Other agencies may require their officers to take a class in cultural competency or Spanish. No matter which certification is required, being certified is a good way to stand out from other candidates and get hired.

Advancement Opportunities

Each police department has its own requirements for promotion and advancement. As a police officer, you may have the opportunity to work your way up to sergeant or even become a police chief. Likewise, you could advance to the position of detective and solve crimes as a criminal investigator, or work as a member of the SWAT team. Federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI, DEA, Border Patrol and Secret Service offer different opportunities for advancement as well. With enough experience and a positive track record, you could apply to become a special agent and conduct investigations or work as a special agent in charge (SAIC) or even a special agent in charge (SAIC) of a field office. You could also apply for a leadership position at the federal level.

Pay and benefits

The pay for a police officer varies by location. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual wage for a police officer was $72,680 as of May 2017. Many police departments offer their officers benefits like health insurance and a retirement plan. Federal law enforcement agencies also provide their employees with excellent benefits. Federal agents and officers can receive excellent pay while also receiving benefits such as paid vacation and sick leave. As an example, federal agents who are just starting out can expect to make $50,000 a year while federal police officers can expect to make $61,000 per year. Almost every police department in the United States provides their officers with excellent benefits like health insurance and a retirement plan. Federal law enforcement agencies also provide their employees with excellent benefits. Federal agents and officers can receive excellent pay while receiving benefits such as paid vacation and sick leave.

Final words

Becoming a police officer is challenging, but it can also be extremely rewarding. While you’ll always have to deal with challenging people, difficult situations and long work hours, the feeling you get from helping people and protecting your community can’t be beat. If you’re interested in becoming a police officer, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Start researching police departments in your area and find out what their hiring requirements are. If there’s a department you’re interested in becoming a part of, make sure you apply early so you don’t miss out on the opportunity.
