History of Utumishi Academy

The idea for a school for police officers’ children was created in the early 1960s, but it wasn’t until 1991 that the late Commissioner of Police, Philip Kilonzo, began putting it into action. The first steering committee was created on May 30, 1991. Hon Elijah Sumbeiywo, a former Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police, served as its first chairman. Mr. Willie M. Mugoh was appointed principal on December 30th, 1992. Twelve teachers quickly followed him. The school admitted its first 80 boys and girls on January 26, 1993.

Because the complex had not yet been constructed, they were housed in the primary school. Students used the anti-stock theft unit Police line’s wooden homes as the boys’ dormitory and the school dining hall. The school quickly outgrown the resources that the primary part could provide, therefore it was relocated to the completed complex structures in January 1995.

With the exception of the period between April 1994 and October 1997, when building was halted, the school has gradually developed in terms of physical facilities, academic facilities, and student academic performance. Mr. Peters Orega took over as the new school principal after Mr. Mugoh left. Mr. Orega has subsequently retired, and Mr. Samuel G. Maina has taken over as principal.
