University of Cape Town Online Application 2023-2024 Apply for UCT
The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university in Cape Town, South Africa (Afrikaans: Universiteit van Kaapstad; Xhosa: Yunibesithi ya yaseKapa). Established in 1829 as the South African College, it was elevated to university status in 1918, making it the oldest institution in South Africa and the oldest in Sub-Saharan Africa still in operation.
UCT is comprised of 57 departments across six faculties that grant bachelor’s (NQF 7) to doctoral (NQF 10) degrees exclusively in English.
It comprises six campuses in the Cape Town areas of Rondebosch, Hiddingh, Observatory, Mowbray, and Waterfront, which are home to 30,000 students.
Although UCT was established by a private act of Parliament in 1918, the Statute of the University of Cape Town (issued in 2002 in accordance with the Higher Education Act) outlines its structure and roles, designating the Chancellor – currently Dr. Precious Moloi Motsepe – as the ceremonial figurehead and vesting real leadership authority in the Vice Chancellor, who is accountable to the University Council.
