After finishing the eight-year primary education programme in Kenya that has been approved, pupils are given the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), a testing organization in Kenya that reports to the Ministry of Education, oversees the exam. The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), a certificate given to pupils after finishing secondary education, is likewise administered and governed by the same authority. Both the KCPE and KCSE were established in 1985, the year Kenya adopted the 8-4-4 educational system.

kcpe Examination
Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Social Studies, Religious Education (Christian, Islamic, and Hindu), and Science are the subjects that will be tested. Both English and Kiswahili have two parts: grammar and composition for English, and lugha and insha for Kiswahili. A small amount of Kenyan history, civics instruction, the current County government structure, and all of the religious studies are included in social studies. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing can elect to take their exams in Kenyan Sign Language rather than Kiswahili.
A subject may receive up to 100 points. Therefore, a candidate can only receive a maximum of 500 marks. The exam period typically begins in the final week of October and lasts three days. The tests were held in October of 2016. The Minister of Education then makes the results public sometime in November . There are continuing efforts to abolish the KCPE exam.
