The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) is a certificate that students in Kenya get when they finish an approved eight-year primary school course. The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), which is in charge of tests in Kenya and is part of the Ministry of Education, is in charge of the test. The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), which is given to students when they finish their secondary education, is also run and regulated by the same group. When the 8-4-4 system of education was put in place in Kenya in 1985, both KCPE and KCSE were started.
KCPE Examination
Math, English, Kiswahili, Social Studies, Religious Education (Christian, Islamic, or Hindu), and Science are all tested. Both English and Kiswahili have two parts: Grammar and Composition for English and Lugha and Insha for Kiswahili. Social Studies teaches a little bit about Kenyan history, how to be a good citizen, and the current system of government in the counties.
It also covers all of the Religious Studies. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing can choose to take their tests in Kenyan Sign Language instead of Kiswahili if they want to. Each subject can be worth up to 100 points. So, the most points that each candidate can get is 500. Exams usually start the last week of October and last for three days. In October 2016, the tests were given. The Minister for Education then tells everyone about the results sometime in November. There are still efforts to get rid of the KCPE exam.
