NBC Premier League
The league originated in 1921 in Dar es Salaam. Initially, it had six participants, growing to include street teams like Arab Sports (Kariakoo) and New Strong Team (Kisutu) in the 1930s, consisting mostly of Arabs and Africans. A Sudanese team joined in 1941, and other early teams included Khalsas (an exclusively Sikh team) and Ilala Staff (Ilalan residents). The Sudanese team disbanded in the mid-1940s.
From 1942, clubs from public institutions dominated, but post-World War II, European players and clubs like Gymkhana Club withdrew. African street teams like Young Africans (Yanga) and Sunderland (later Simba) rose, along with Goan’s Club and Agha Khan Club.
Yanga and Sunderland became prominent in Dar es Salaam, with Yanga entering the first division in 1938 and winning four major cups in 1942. Sunderland joined soon after, securing four significant trophies in 1946.
By 1955, the league had 38 registered clubs, evolving into the “National League” by 1965 and later becoming the “First Division Soccer League” and the “Premier League” in 1997. Tanzania Breweries sponsored it, leading to the Tanzania Breweries League (TBL) until a contract conflict in 2001. Vodacom took over in 2002 until 2009, with a re-signing the same year.
Competition Format: The Tanzanian Premier League follows a double round-robin format, with teams playing each other twice. Wins earn three points, draws one point for both, and losses zero points.
Promotion & Relegation: The bottom two teams relegate to the Championship, replaced by the Championship winners and runners-up. The third and fourth worst-ranked teams enter a play-off with the 3rd and 4th placed teams from the First Division.
International Competitions: CAF teams in Tanzania participate in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
Recent positive performances raised Tanzania’s CAF ranking. The league champion qualifies for the CAF Champions League, and from 2021-22, the second-placed team also qualifies. The Tanzania FA Cup winner enters the CAF Confederation Cup since 2015–16, and from 2021-22, the FA Cup champions and third-placed Premier League team also qualify.
