Simba Sports Club, a professional football team situated in the Kariakoo ward of the Ilala District within Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Region, has a rich history. Established in 1936 as Queen, later named Sunderland, and eventually rebranded as Simba (meaning “Lion” in Swahili) in 1971, the team earned the nickname “Wekundu wa Msimbazi” (The Reds of Msimbazi) owing to their distinct all-red home attire and their headquarters’ location on Msimbazi Street in Kariakoo.
Simba SC boasts an impressive record, securing 22 league titles and five domestic cups while actively participating in multiple editions of the CAF Champions League. Additionally, they’ve clinched the CECAFA Club Championship six times, establishing their status as one of East and Central Africa’s formidable clubs.
The team hosts its home matches at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Temeke District’s Miburani ward. Notably, in 2022, Simba experienced exceptional growth on Instagram, amassing 1.9 million followers, marking an 89% surge from the previous year.
Recognized for their prowess, Simba was ranked 10th among African clubs by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) in the May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023 rankings. Globally, the club secured the 105th spot in the IFFHS World Ranking.
Financially robust, Simba stands as one of East Africa’s wealthiest clubs, unveiling a substantial budget of TSh 6.1 billion (equivalent to $5.3 million) for the 2019/2020 season.
The club maintains a longstanding rivalry with Yanga, engaging in the Kariakoo derby, named after the ward where both teams originated. This intense rivalry earned the distinction of being ranked 5th among the most renowned African derbies.
