The Census: What You Need To Know About Your Data
The Statistician’s life is not for everyone. There are days when it’s pure drudgery and others when the mind reels with numbers, statistics, graphs and charts. But there is also a thrill that comes with discovering facts about people that no one else knows. That thrill comes every 10 years or so when the Census takes place. The result of the Census helps us understand who we are as a nation. It tells us where we live, how educated we are, what language we speak, what jobs we have and our incomes. The Census is good news because it brings transparency to various aspects of our lives as citizens of India. Here’s everything you need to know about your data…
What is the Census?
The Census is the process of collecting and publishing data about every resident in a country. Once every ten years, a census is taken of every household in the country to discover information about who lives there, their age, gender, employment, income, and so on. In the UK, we have an Office for National Statistics (ONS) that oversees the Census. In the US, it’s the Census Bureau. In India, it’s the Office of the Registrar General, and Census Commissioner.
When is the Census conducted?
The Census is usually conducted once every 10 years. The first Census in independent India was conducted in 1951. The next was in 1961, followed by 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011, and the next one will be 2021. The Census is mandated by the Constitution of India, which states that the Census must be conducted every decade, with the last one being held in March 2011.
Why is the Census done?
The Census is done to identify demographic, economic and social trends, expected changes in patterns of production, governance, and use of natural resources. The Census also provides a snapshot of the country’s current situation, helping government formulate future policies.
When will we know what’s in our data?
The Census data will be released in two phases. The first phase will come out around the middle of August, and the second towards the end of the year. This year, the data will be released 10 years after the Census. So, in 2021, we will receive data of the 2021 Census.
What will be in your data?
Let’s start with the basics. Your data will include your age, gender, language and whether you are a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, religious minority, if you are disabled, your religion, if you were residing in an urban or rural area, your educational qualifications, and your employment details.
Is it worth checking your data?
The Census data is completely confidential. No one will ever know it’s you unless you tell them. The data is used for various government and non-government projects. It helps various companies understand the kind of people living in India, and the kind of products to offer them. A close look at the Census data will give you an idea about the people around you. It may even help you decide where you want to live.
What to look for in the Census Data?
The most important part of the data is the language category. It will tell you what language people around you are speaking, how many people are using which language and their percentage in the total population. This data is crucial, as it will tell you what region of the country the people living in your area belong to. The data in the education (whether the person is educated or not, what is their highest educational qualification, and what percentage of people are educated in your area) and employment (what kind of job people are doing, what percentage people in your area are employed, and what are the main industries in your area) categories will be important as well.
Final Thoughts
The Census is an important part of our lives. It tells us what people around us are like, where they come from and what kind of job they do. The data is completely confidential and will not reveal your name or address. It will tell you only about your neighbourhood. It is worth checking your data to know more about your neighbourhood and the people living in it.
