The Tanzania national football team, known as the Taifa Stars, represents Tanzania in men’s international football and is overseen by the Tanzania Football Federation. The team’s base is at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam, and currently, they are led by the head coach Adel Amrouche from Algeria.

Tanzania has never secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup. Initially, before merging with Zanzibar, the team competed as the Tanganyika national football team. They represent both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Zanzibar, an island within Tanzania (formerly an independent nation), is an associate member of CAF. While it has played matches against other nations, it isn’t eligible to participate in the World Cup or Africa Cup of Nations. Historically, Tanzania faced about 40 years of limited success following their qualification for the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite struggles in African and World Cup qualifiers, a notable performance occurred during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. The Taifa Stars secured victories against Burkina Faso but narrowly missed out on group victory, finishing three points behind Senegal.

In 2010, Tanzania clinched the CECAFA Cup for the third time, marking a significant achievement. Another memorable moment was a 1–0 triumph against South Africa in the 2017 COSAFA Cup Quarter-finals. However, they later lost 2–4 to Zambia in the Semi-finals. Yet, in the Third-place playoff, Tanzania emerged victorious in a penalty shootout against Lesotho after a goalless extra time, marking a notable feat.

An important milestone came on March 24, 2019, when Tanzania defeated East African rivals Uganda 3–0, securing a place in the Africa Cup of Nations finals after 39 years. At the Finals, placed as the weakest team in Group C, the Taifa Stars lost all three matches, as anticipated. In subsequent events, Tanzania qualified for the African Nations Championship for the second time and also triumphed over Burundi in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
