Los Angeles Lakers Schedule 2022-23

The franchise originated with the 1947 acquisition of a defunct National Basketball Association club, the Detroit Gems (NBL). The new club debuted in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the name Minneapolis Lakers.  Initially a member of the National Basketball League, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL title before joining the rival Basketball Association of America, where they won five of the following six titles under the direction of star George Mikan. After experiencing financial difficulties in the late 1950s as a result of Mikan’s retirement, they moved to Los Angeles before to the 1960–61 season.

Los Angeles reached the NBA Finals six times in the 1960s, led by future Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, but lost every series to the Boston Celtics, initiating their historic rivalry. In 1968, the Lakers acquired Wilt Chamberlain, a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and in 1972, under new head coach Bill Sharman, they won their sixth NBA championship and first in Los Angeles.

After West and Chamberlain retired, the club acquired superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who would go on to win three MVP awards as a Laker. While the club was unable to reach the Finals in the late 1970s, two significant developments in 1979 ushered in a new golden period for the franchise. As the owner of the Lakers, Jerry Buss was the first to see basketball games as entertainment spectacles in addition to athletic activities. Second, the Lakers selected Magic Johnson with the first overall selection in the 1979 NBA draft.Lakers game Today channel
