About NECTA
After Tanzania Mainland withdrew from the East African Examinations Council in 1971 and before NECTA was created by law in 1973, all examinations were administered by the Curriculum and Examinations Section of the Ministry of Education. In accordance with the law, the Examinations became NECTA’s duty upon its creation. The Curriculum continued to be under the Ministry of Education and the University College, Dar es Salaam until when it was taken over by the newly founded, autonomous Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD) in 1975, which in 1993 was renamed as the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) (TIE).
The initial employees of NECTA were hired between 1972 and 1976, including Mr. P. P. Gandye, who was hired in 1972 and made Executive Secretary in 1994. The remainder of the employees continued to be recruited, particularly after NECTA relocated from the Ministry of Education Headquarters to its current location in Kijitonyama, close to Mwenge. The current number of NECTA employees exceeds 250.
The Origination of NECTA
The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) is a government institution formed by Act No. 21 of 1973 of the Parliament. NECTA is responsible for administering the Tanzanian National Examinations.
The establishment of NECTA was a consequence of Tanzania Mainland’s withdrawal from the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in April 1971 to run its own examinations. Zanzibar withdrew from the EAEC in 1970.
Prior to the withdrawal, between 1968 and 1971, Tanzania participated in overseas Secondary School Examinations jointly administered by the East African Syndicate, which were previously administered solely by the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate.
The Examinations conducted by the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate then were the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate Examinations. African students first took the School Certificate Examinations in 1947 and the Higher School Certificate Examinations in 1960.
