You can use WhatsApp on your cell phone to check the status of your SASSA:

Send the word “Sassa” to 082 046 8553, which is the number for the Sassa WhatsApp app.
Just send back the word “Status.”
If you have a reference number, say “Yes.”
Send back the phone number you used when you applied for the grant.
Give your reference number when you answer.

How to Find Out Your Sassa Balance

On the official SASSA website, at https://www.sassa.gov.za, grant applicants can also check the status of their SRD grant applications.

What if my request for a grant payment was turned down?

When they check their status, some people find that their grant payment is being turned down with the message “Registered at SARS for PAYE” or “Receiving a source of income.” It is important to note that, according to SASSA rules, the applicant must be unemployed in order to get the grant (and not have any source of income). Also, they don’t get any grants from UIF or any other sources.

But starting in July 2021, this won’t apply to people who get a child support grant. SASSA says that when an application is turned down, it’s usually because the applicant has a monthly income of more than R595, minus any child grant.

Update on the SASSA R350 grant application

This means that people who don’t have bank accounts will be able to get cash. Bank Mobile Money Transfers are another way to get paid.

Remember that you shouldn’t go there until you’ve gotten an SMS telling you that your grant is ready.
