The South African Premier Division, or DStv Premiership as it is more commonly known, is the top level of competition in South Africa’s league system for professional male football/soccer players and has been in existence since 1996 under various sponsorship arrangements.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is the governing body of association football in South Africa at the top level, and its name has been used historically and in common parlance since the league’s inception.

In 1996, the National Soccer League and what was left of the National Professional Soccer League came to an agreement that would lead to the formation of the league. On its official website, the league acknowledges that it still operates under its original name, although for purely legal reasons, while the Premier Soccer League serves as its trade brand.
