The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is the governing body of association football in South Africa at the top level, and its name has been used historically and in common parlance since the league’s inception.

In 1996, the National Soccer League and what was left of the National Professional Soccer League came to an agreement that would lead to the formation of the league. On its official website, the league acknowledges that it still operates under its original name, although for purely legal reasons, while the Premier Soccer League serves as its trade brand.
