MTN South Africa History
M-Cell was founded in 1994 with the aid of the South African government. John Beck was replaced as CEO in 1995 by Robert (Bob) Chaphe and company founder Leena Jaitley. In 2001, the firm announced that Johnnic Holdings was the controlling shareholder and Irene Charnley was the chairperson. In 2002, Phuthuma Nhleko was appointed CEO, succeeding Paul Edwards, who had invested in Nigerian expansion.
In South Africa, MTN’s competitors include Vodacom, Cell C, and Telkom Mobile.
Bharti Airtel, an Indian telecommunications firm, investigated the idea of acquiring MTN Group in May 2008. Reliance Communications was also in negotiations with MTN regarding a “possible business combination.” In July, the two corporations concluded their merger discussions.
MTN Group agreed in June 2008 to acquire Verizon Business South Africa, a provider of data services to clients in South Africa and four other African nations. The transaction was finalized on February 28, 2009.
On June 26, 2009, the subsidiary of MTN Group amalgamated with Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS). The merged subsidiary served as MTN’s international gateway for its carrier services.
MTN established a cooperation with Afrihost to provide DSL Broadband services throughout Africa in October 2012.
Shanduka Group, a South African holding company, acquired a minority stake in MTN Group’s Nigeria business for $335 million in November 2012.

In 2014, MTN was among the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands and was recognized as Africa’s Most Admired and Most Valuable Brand. In 2015, MTN maintained its position as the Most Admired and Most Valuable African Brand.
Rob Shuter was hired as the company’s chief executive officer in March 2016.
On 1 September 2020, Ralph Mupita was appointed Chief Executive Officer, replacing Shutter.
