CAF Champions League
Top-tier African clubs compete annually in the Confederation of African Football-hosted CAF Champions League, formerly known as the African Cup of Champions Clubs and now called as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League due to sponsorship reasons. A round-robin group stage that establishes eligibility for a double-legged knockout stage and a single-leg final selects the competition’s victors. It is one of the most renowned football competitions in the world and the most prestigious club competition in African football.
The competition’s victor advances to the FIFA Club World Cup, which is contested by the winners of the six continental confederations. In the CAF Super Cup the following year, they also get to take against the CAF Confederation Cup champion. Clubs that finished second in their national leagues but did not proceed to the Champions League are eligible for the lower-tier CAF Confederation Cup.
The most titles have been won by Egyptian clubs (16), with Morocco coming in second with 7. With three clubs each, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria have the most champions. Twelve of the 26 winning clubs have won the competition more than once. Al Ahly is the most successful club in the competition’s history, having won a record 10 championships.
