The Tanzania National Football Team, known in Swahili as Timu ya Taifa ya Mpira wa Miguu ya Tanzania, is the country of Tanzania’s national football team. They play their home games at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam, and their head coach is Algerian Adel Amrouche.

Tanzania is represented in men’s international football by the Tanzania Football Federation. The Taifa Stars is the slang term for them. Tanzania has never made it into the World Cup of FIFA. The team previously competed as the Tanganyika national football team and is a representative of both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Tanzania has four World Cup berths.

Zanzibar, an island that is now a part of Tanzania but was once its own country, is also an associate member of CAF and has participated in international competitions, although it is not qualified to participate in either the World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations. Tanzania has struggled in both African and World Cup qualifications since making it to the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, going nearly 40 years without experiencing significant success. The Taifa Stars performed best during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, when they twice overcame Burkina Faso and only fell three points short of Senegal, who won their group. For the third time, Tanzania won the CECAFA Cup in 2010. [Reference needed]

A recent accomplishment was a 1-0 victory over South Africa in the quarterfinals of the 2017 COSAFA Cup. However, Tanzania fell to Zambia 2-4 in the Semifinals. Subsequently, in the third-place playoff, Tanzania defeated Lesotho 4-2 on penalties after extra time resulted in a scoreless tie. Tanzania’s third-place finish was regarded as their greatest football accomplishment in a long time.

Tanzania won its East African rivalry with Uganda 3-0 on March 24, 2019, to go to the Africa Cup of Nations finals for the first time in 39 years. The Taifa Stars, who were the worst team in their group, lost all three of their games in Group C in the Finals, as was expected. A few months later, Tanzania defeated Burundi in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and earned a spot in the African Nations Championship for the first time ever.
