South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government national agency established in April 2005 to distribute social subsidies on behalf of the Department of Social Development.

 

The DSD has supervision authority over the Agency but no operational authority over it.

 

It was also intended to transfer the function of social security from the provinces of South Africa to the national realm of government, and it reports to the Department of Social Development (DSD). Busisiwe Memela – Khambula is the company’s current CEO.

According to Schedule 3A of the Public Finance Management Act, SASSA is a public entity.

The parastatal’s major tasks are related to the administration and payment of social grants: application processing, verification and approval of applications, grant disbursement and payment to eligible beneficiaries, quality assurance, and fraud prevention and detection.

The number of South Africans receiving social aid has increased from 3.8 million in April 2001 to 11 million in March 2006 and 17 million in 2017.

From May 2020 to April 2021, millions of South Africans got the Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant.
