Funza Lushaka Bursary 2023 for South African Teachers
The Department of Basic Education is in charge of schools throughout South Africa, from Grade R to Grade 12, as well as adult literacy programs. The DBE was previously part of the National Department of Education until splitting into two: the DBE (Department of Basic Education) and the DHE (Department of Higher Education) (Department of Higher Education)
The department’s mission is to build a sustainable South African education system for the twenty-first century, one in which all learners have access to learning, training, and education. Their objective is that the education system would improve the quality of life for all South Africans while also fostering a peaceful, successful, and democratic nation.
ABOUT THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERED FIELDS
For the 2023 academic year, the Department of Education is encouraging students to apply for the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme.
The Funza Lushaka Bursary is awarded each year to students pursuing the following Teaching qualifications:
Undergraduate studies: a four-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree with a specialization in one of the following:
Foundation Phase (Grades R through 3) (preferably majoring in South African Indigenous Languages, Neurodevelopment Needs, Braille, SASL)
Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 – 6) (preferably majoring in 2 of these subjects: Languages, Mathematics, and Natural Science & Technology)
Senior and Postsecondary Education and Training (Grade 7 to Grade 12) Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Technology, Civil Technology, Computer Applications Technology, Electrical Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Technology, Physical Sciences, Languages, Maritime Studies, Coding and Robitics, Technical Mathematics and Technical Science are preferred majors.
Graduate studies include a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) program for:
Senior and Postsecondary Education and Training (Grade 7 to Grade 12)
The famous Funza Lushaka bursary is offered annually to individuals studying to become teachers and is based on academic merit.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED, RENEWAL, AND SERVICE CONTRACT
Tuition fees, books, study materials, accommodation, meals, teaching practice, and an allowance for general living expenses, if available and capped at a particular amount, will be covered by the bursary.
Bursaries are given out for one academic year at a time, and students must reapply for support each year. Renewal of the bursary is NOT assured and is based on students’ academic achievement.
Bursary winners will be obliged to teach at a public school (chosen by the Provincial Education Department (PED)) after graduation; the period of the service contract will be equal to the duration of the bursary funds received.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY
Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria (please note that failure to meet all requirements will result in your application being rejected):
All applicants must fulfill the following requirements:
- You must be a citizen of South Africa.
- You must have a valid South African identification number.
- If you are applying for the first time, you must be 30 years old or younger.
- You must have been approved to study for a BEd or PGCE, specializing in at least two of the priority subject areas (extended programmes are not covered)
- You must have been admitted to study at a South African public university.
- You must have an excellent academic record.
- You must be willing to teach at any school that the Provincial Education Department chooses (PED)
- You must NOT be an employee of a higher education institution (or a spouse, dependent or child of a Higher Education Institution employee)
- You must be dedicated and passionate about a career in education, including an interest in working with children, enthusiasm for teaching, and the willingness and ability to tackle problems with honesty.
- You must NOT have any other teaching credentials.
- You must not have any criminal history.
- There must be no complaints of misbehavior against you.
- You must NOT have been fired from your job.
First-time university students must additionally meet the following requirements:
You must have passed Matric with an exemption, endorsement, or bachelor degree to be considered for admission.
Students who will specialize in Foundation Phase must have a least level 2 pass in Mathematics OR a minimum level 4 pass in Mathematical Literacy AND a minimum level 4 pass in their home language.
Students wishing to specialize in the Intermediate Phase must have obtained a minimum level 4 pass in Mathematics AND a minimum level 4 pass in your Home Language in Matric OR a minimum level 4 pass in Science AND a minimum level 4 pass in your Home Language.
Students who will specialize in teaching Technology subjects (including CAT, IT, and other subjects from the Technical stream) but did not pass these subjects in Matric: In Matric, you must have obtained a minimum level 4 pass in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics.
Please keep in mind that if the tertiary institution’s entry criteria are higher than the bursary requirement, the higher requirement will apply.
New university students must additionally meet the following requirements:
- You must have completed all topics in your prior year of tertiary education.
- You must have obtained a minimum overall average of 55% in all topics studied during your previous year of tertiary study.
- In the preceding year of tertiary studies, you must have obtained a minimum overall average of 66.6% in subjects relating to the teaching area of expertise.
New PGCE students must additionally meet the following requirements:
- You must have a qualification that allows you to enter the PGCE programme.
- You must be pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching (SPFET) (Grade 7 to Grade 12)
- You must have two priority subjects, with one module completed successfully at the third year level and one module finished successfully at the second year level.
- To qualify to teach it as a subject at school, you must have a sufficient number of modules in the priority subjects.
APPLYING FOR THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY
The Funza Lushaka Bursary Application 2023 must be submitted online.
To apply for a bursary, applicants must complete the following steps:
1) Go to the website of the e-Government Portal.
2) Create an account by entering your personal information (after ticking the boxes to agree to the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy of the e-Gov portal)
3) Sign in using your chosen username and password.
4) From the e-Services Menu, select the “Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme.”
5) Enter the OTP that you received.
6) Review and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
7) On the dashboard, click the “2023 application” option.
8) Enter the required details.
9) To confirm your information, read and accept the statement.

APPLICATION NOTES FOR THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY
Before applying, students must read the Funza Lushaka Bursary Information.
When applying, students must have a valid student ID number (this will be received after you have been accepted or provisionally accepted at university).
Check that the information you’ve entered is correct – you’ll be able to access your online application and make adjustments before final submission.
Make certain that your main topic areas on your application are the ones in which you will specialize.
The academic year of study denotes the level of study (B Ed 1 is 1st year, B Ed 2 is 2nd year etc).
After applying for the bursary, you are not permitted to move institutions.
Applying for the bursary does not guarantee that you will receive it.
Documents supporting your application must be sent to your university’s Funza Lushaka office.
