The Samia Scholarship for 2022/23

On September 27, 2022, the government will officially announce which students will get the Samia Scholarship. These students will have done well in science classes.

 

The Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) was set up by Act No.9 of 2004 (as changed in 2007, 2014, and 2016) to help needy and qualified Tanzanian students get loans and grants for higher education. The main responsibilities of HESLB are:

To help needy students who get into accredited higher education institutions but don’t have the money to pay for their education by giving them loans.
To get past-due loans from loan recipients and use them as a revolving fund to keep the Board running.
To make the student financing ecosystem work better by forming strategic partnerships

 

How much is the Samia Scholarship worth?

For the first year of the Samia Scholarship, 3 billion shillings have been set aside. Next year, that amount is expected to double, to 6 billion.

What HESLB Does

Take charge of and manage loanable funds
Create ways to figure out if a student is eligible for a loan.
Manage and oversee the giving out and paying back of loans since 1994.
Give loans to college students who qualify and need them.
Keep and update the register and other records of who got loans and how much they got.
Collect payments on all student loans given out since 1994 so that the money can be given to other Tanzanian students in need.
Give the Minister advice on policy and legal issues related to giving out and getting back student loans.
Set up working links between the Board, higher education institutions, loan recipients, and employers so that loanable funds can be given out and paid back effectively.
Set up and keep up a network of cooperation between the Board and other local and international organizations with an interest in higher education, whether they are government or non-government.
Do research and keep track of a database of other scholarships, sponsorships, and awards that Tanzanian students can apply for.
Do any other jobs that the Board, the Act, or any other written law gives them.

 

 

 

Education, Science, and Technology Minister

Prof. Adolf Mkenda, who is the Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, has said that Bill 3 will be used to pay sixth-form students who did well on science tests in sixth form. Today, September 25, 2022, Minister Mkenda said that the “Samia Scholarship” program will be open to the public on September 27, 2022, with 640 students enrolled at first.

Professor Mkenda has also asked Tanzanians to send in drafts of their books and other well-known writings so they can compete for the Mwalimu Nyerere prizes for creative authors.
