Tanzania National Main Stadium also known as Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located in Miburani ward of Temeke District in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It opened in 2007 and was built adjacent to Uhuru Stadium, the former national stadium. It hosts major football matches such as the Tanzanian Premier League and home matches of the Tanzania national football team.

With 60,000 seats it is the eleventh largest stadium in Africa and the largest stadium in Tanzania. It is owned by the Tanzanian Government. The stadium was built by Beijing Construction Engineering Group at a cost of $56 million.

A capacity crowd attended the first derby between Simba S.C. and Young Africans S.C. at the stadium in Dar es-Salaam 2008. Both clubs mostly draw low attendances for their other league matches.

Simba Sc

Simba Sports Club is a Tanzanian football club that is situated in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam.

The club was formerly known as Eagles before changing its name to Sunderland in 1936. They were nicknamed Simba in 1971. (Swahili for “Lion”.)

Simba SC is Tanzania’s second-largest club by fan base and social media engagement, behind only Young Africans SC (Yanga). Simba SC has almost 5 million followers across all social media channels, making it one of the most followed African teams. The club joined TikTok in March 2022 and gained over 10,000 followers in only three days. With a total budget of Sh 5 billion (approximately to $2.1 million) announced for the 2019/2020 season, the club is likewise regarded one of the wealthiest in East Africa.


Yanga Sc

YANGA, or Young Africans Sports Club, is a football club situated in Jangwani, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The club was founded in 1935 and plays its home games at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Young Africans, also known as “Wananchi” (Citizens) and “Yanga” (Young Boys), is Tanzania’s largest club. The team has won 27 league championships and a number of domestic cups, as well as competing in many editions of the CAF Champions League. They are one of East Africa’s most powerful clubs, having won the CECAFA Club Championship five times.

Africans flocked to the club, and it became a symbol of the anti-colonial campaign. Young Africans were identified with nationalists and independence warriors, prompting the political party TANU to adopt yellow and green as its major colors. Young Africans is Tanzania’s most successful and powerful football team. The club is now undergoing a change that will see investors hold 49 percent of the club and club members own 51 percent.

The club has a long-running rivalry with Simba, with whom they compete in the Dar es Salaam (also known as Kariakoo) derby. One of the most renowned African derbies, the rivalry was placed fifth.
