The South African Premier Tier, often known as the DStv Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is a men’s professional football league in South Africa. It is the top division in the country’s football league structure. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) – the name of the countrys professional football administration – is frequently referred to as the division since it is the highest level of association football in South Africa.

The National Soccer League (South Africa) and the remains of the National Professional Soccer League came together in 1996 to become the league (South Africa).

To prevent schedule congestion, the league was cut from 18 to 16 teams at the conclusion of the 2001–02 season, resulting in the disbandment of two clubs, Ria Stars and Free State Stars.

South African football was shaken by a match-fixing controversy in 2004. In June 2004, the South African police initiated an investigation nicknamed “Operation Dribble.” More than 40 people were arrested, including club executives, match commissioners, referees, and their helpers.

After winning the famous trophy for the first time in a decade in 2004, Kaizer Chiefs successfully defended their league championship in 2005.

Mamelodi Sundowns won the league championship for the fourth time in 2005–06.

The PSL inked an R1.6 billion broadcast agreement with SuperSport in 2007. It is the largest sports agreement in South African history, propelling the Premier League into the top 15 leagues in the world in terms of commercial broadcast rights.

In the same year, ABSA took over as title sponsor from Castle Lager.

SuperSport United achieved a hat-trick of championships in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

According to the CAF 5-Year Ranking methodology, the league is ranked 6th best in Africa as of May 2019.

The PSL will provide each team with a monthly stipend of 2 million rand for the 2018–19 season, with cash coming from television broadcasting rights and national sponsorships. A ten million rand reward is awarded to the Premiership winner.

ABSA expanded their sponsorship of the PSL to 39.9 million rands in 2019.

As a result, the ABSA Premiership league champions would get R15 million. ABSA, on the other hand, has ended its partnership with the PSL as of June 4, 2020.

PSL chairman Irvin Khoza and Multichoice announced on September 24, 2020 that DStv will be the new sponsor, thereby renaming the competition the DStv Premiership. SuperSport Blitz and specialized SuperSport PSL networks broadcasted the announcement live.
