The Geita Gold Mine is an open-pit gold mine in Tanzania’s Geita District (formerly Mwanza Region). AngloGold Ashanti operates the mine.
The mine employed close to 3,200 people in 2008, accounting for 6% of the company’s total annual gold production.
In modern times, gold mining in Tanzania began with gold discoveries near Lake Victoria in 1894, during the German colonial period. The Sekenke Gold Mine opened in 1909 in what was then German East Africa, and gold mining in Tanzania boomed between 1930 and WWII.
Tanganyika Concessions learned of gold prospectors’ success near Mgusu, southwest of Lake Victoria, in the 1930s, and formed Kentan Gold Area Limited in 1934 to develop these discoveries. Saragura Development Company Limited and Geita Gold Mining Company Limited are two of the company’s subsidiaries.
The Geita Gold Mining Company was established to manage the Geita Gold Mine in Tanganyika, which had been transferred to it from the Sagura Development Company.
The year 1936 marked the start of production. It hoped to start crushing 500 tons per day soon, according to a 1937 report, and could become East Africa’s largest gold producer. From the mine to Lake Victoria, the company built a road and a jetty. It had constructed housing and medical facilities, as well as establishing a private wireless station and subsidizing a weekly air service. In December 1938, gold was first milled in Geita.
