With the FIFA World Cup being hosted by Qatar in 2022, several Ghanaian players have been named to the country’s 23-man squad for the tournament. The Black Stars will be looking to improve on their performance in the 2014 World Cup, having finished as the runners-up in the tournament.

Thiam has been a mainstay for the Ghana national team, making his debut for the Black Stars in 2006. Since then, the goalkeeper has gone on to make a total of 75 appearances for the team.
For the past few years, Thiam has been playing for Deportivo la Coruña in the Spanish La Liga. The Black Stars will be hoping that the experienced goalkeeper can be a great asset in Russia.

In the case of Afful, the keeper has been with the Black Stars since 2007. During the last World Cup, Afful was the Black Stars’ first choice keeper. The Ghanaian has since gone on to win the Africa Nations Cup (CHAN) with his country, earlier this year.

Ghana Black Stars FIFA World Cup 2022 : Defenders

The Black Stars will be counting on a very experienced defence for the World Cup. The back four for the Black Stars will include John Boye, Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah and Daniel Amartey. Afful’s speed and Boye’s power will be the key to the Black Stars’ success in the World Cup.
The two will have to work very closely with the deep-lying playmaker Daniel Amartey to ensure that the Black Stars’ plan of attack works as intended. Amartey was named as one of the six Young Players to Watch in the upcoming World Cup by FIFA in December 2018.
Boye has been a key member of the Black Stars since he made his debut in 2012. The defender has gone on to make a total of 44 appearances for the team. He is primarily a centre-back, but he has played as a right-back on occasion as well. He is also the captain of the Black Stars.
